Roberto Carlos to join Turkish champions Fenerbahce

By Soccer Blog | Jun 9, 2007

Real Madrid’s Brazilian wingback Roberto Carlos will join Fenerbahce after the end of the 2006-2007 La Liga season. The move will bring to an end Carlos’ 11 year association with Real Madrid, whom he had joined in 1996 from Inter.

Carlos has not been on the best terms with Fabio Capello, and age has started to catch up on him. He was considered by many to be responsible for Roy Makaay’s lightening quick goal when Madrid faced off against Bayern in the Champions League.Plus Fenerbahce have the legendary Zico as manager, along with fellow Brazilian Alex. He will also play alongside Sanli Tuncay and Mateja Kezman.

One thing is for sure, Turkey will be more competitive than some of the other leagues that players close to retirement have chosen to play. Galatasaray and Besiktas will provide fierce competition, and Carlos will also get an opportunity to play in next season’s Champions League.
