Manchester United win Community Shield

By Soccer Blog | Aug 7, 2007

Premiership champions Manchester United have won the FA Community Shield by beating Chelsea 3-0 on penalties. The score was tied at a goal apiece after regular play. Ryan Giggs scored for United, while new French winger Florent Malouda was on the scoresheet for Jose Mourinho’s side. This is United’s sixteenth Community Shield victory. Dutch goalkeeper Edwin Van Der Sar was the hero for the Red Devils as he blocked three Chelsea spot kicks.
It is also second time unlucky for Chelsea, having lost to Liverpool last year. Four different teams have won the Community Shield in the last four years, and this is United’s first title since 2003, when they beat Arsenal. This was also the first final to be held at the Wembley stadium since 2000

A good way for United to enter the season. Defending their title will not be easy, and Sir Alex Ferguson knows that. Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea will be hot on their heels. Even teams like Spurs, Newcastle and Manchester City could pose a challenge.
