Mark Delaney retires

By Soccer Blog | Aug 16, 2007

Wales and Aston Villa defender Mark Delaney has decided to pull the curtains down on his playing career. The 31 year old footballer has had quite a bit of trouble with his knee in recent years and missed the whole of last season due to injury. His loss will be felt a lot more by Wales, whose defence will lose one of its stalwarts. Delaney made 193 appearances in his 8 and a half year stay at Villa Park.

Another player you are reminded of when you read about the Delaney saga is Chris Coleman. Coleman was also a Welsh defender who called it a day thanks to recurring injuries. He currently manages Real Sociedad. Delaney too reportedly wants to get into coaching. Considering that he was a pretty reliable player, he could become quite a reliable manager one day. For 250,00 pounds, he will always rank as one of Aston Villa’s best signings.
