
The title sounds a bit lame, but that was what I could cook up just now
Some of you might have already heard about the Marion Jones controversy. Jones, a triple gold medallist at the Sydney Olympic Games admitted to using performance enhancing drugs. 2006 Tour De France winner Floyd Landis was stripped of his title after tests revealed an abnormally high level of testesterone.
Why does sports ban steroid and drug usage ? It is simply because we believe in a level playing field for competitors, but certain steroids can result in an increase in the endurance and speed of an athlete.
A few other examples, especially from the field of soccer
Diego Maradona- Missed the 1994 Football World Cup because he tested positive for ephedrine.
Marco Borriello was given a ban for using prednisolone and prednisone, both corticosteroids. Note that corticosteroids are steroids, but they are not the same as anabolic steroids.
Corticosteroids are produced in the adrenal cortex ( the hormone cortisol)
Sergei Sokolov, an Azerbaijaini footballer, was banned for eighteen months, again for using corticosteroids.
Uwe Beyer, a bronze medallist at the Tokyo Olympics, admitted in a later interview that he used anabolic steroids.
In most countries, people are not allowed to buy steroids over the counter. This has resulted in a flourishing black market, and there are fears that the quality of these products will cause further problems.
Wikipedia states that one can however freely buy them in countries like Mexico and Thailand.
Philip Sweitzer wrote a letter to the Members of House Committee in July 2005, in which he reportedly asked for a reconsideration of the current policy.
