Sunderland to release eight players

By Soccer Blog | Jun 4, 2008

Sunderland have announced that they will not be renewing the contracts of eight players this summer, including Andy Cole and Ian Harte. The other six players to be shown the door by the Black Cats are Stanislav Varga, Stephen Wright, Jack Pelter,Gavin Donoghue, Billy Dennehy and Jake Richardson. The future of Dwight Yorke is also unclear, but the former Manchester United striker is reported to be negotiating a deal that will allow him to slowly move into a coaching role.

Former Leeds defender Harte arrived at the Stadium of Light in August 2007, but did not make too much of an impact. Sunderland were definite contenders for the drop, but some excelllent results in the second half of the season saw them stay afloat in the Premiership.

Aalborg forward Rade Prica could also be making a return to Sweden, with Keane reportedly considering the 2 million pound January signing to not be up to the mark.
