I wanted to slap Keegan- Newcastle chief

By Soccer Blog | Sep 21, 2008

Newcastle United are in a mess currently. The fans have made their displeasure over Kevin Keegan’s exit clear, and Mike Ashley wants to sell the club, but cannot find a willing buyer. And if the Mirror is to be believed, Newcastle CEO Derek Llambias allegedly said that he would have slapped Keegan had a third person not been in the room. Ashley values the club at round £480 million, a price that has seen some potential buyers being driven off.

Ashley has also reportedly contacted Keith Harris, the man who helped Sinawatra acquire Manchester City, and asked him to find a new owner for the Tyneside club. Ashley has also allegedly lost around £300m after HBOS shares plunged in the share market.

Managerless Newcastle slumped to a 1-3 defeat at Upton Park, with David di Michele scoring twice for the Hammers. And things look bad for the Geordies as they host Tottenham Hotspur in the Carling Cup. They have beaten Spurs in the last five meetings between the two clubs, but that counts for almost nothing given that Newcastle are looking a ship that doesn’t know where it is going.
