Edwin van der Sar renews Manchester United contract

Dutch veteran Edwin van der Sar has signed a one year extension to his contract at Old Trafford. The former Ajax and Juventus keeper will now be at Manchester United till 2010.

Van der Sar, who is the most capped Dutch player of all time, had initially planned to retire at the end of the 2008-09 season, but changed his mind when Ferguson said that he would be still be first choice at Old Trafford for next year should he decide to continue playing on.

Van der Sar’s extension would mean that Tomasz Kuzcsak and Ben Foster will continue to be second and third choice goalkeepers at Old Trafford.

Van der Sar, who joined United in June 2005, has been described by Sir Alex Ferguson as the best goalkeeper the latter has worked with after Danish legend Peter Schmeichel.
