Danish midfielder Thomas Gravesen has announced his retirement from professional football. The 32 year old was without a club after parting company with Scottish giants Celtic in August 2008.
Gravesen started his career with local club Vejle before moving to Hamburger SV in 1997. After three years in Germany, he moved to Everton and played a crucial role in the Toffees’ successful 2004-05 season when they finished fourth, three points ahead of local rivals Liverpool.
From Everton, Gravesen moved to Real Madrid. Life at Los Merengues didn’t quite suit him, and he was shipped off to Celtic in 2006. In August 2007, he returned to Goodison Park on loan, but could not secure a permanent move back to England.
A pity we will not see Gravesen in his football boots anymore.
Gravesen made 66 international appearances for Denmark, and retired from international football in 2006 to focus on his club career.
Gravesen said that he thought it was the right time for him to retire.
“I’ll be 33 in March, and that’s why it’s right for me to stop now, before I’m forced to retire for age and health reasons.”
