Portsmouth sign Theofanis Gekas

By Soccer Blog | Feb 2, 2009

theofanis-gekasSoccer-blogger.com had reported a few days back that Bayer Leverkusen were willing to let Greek striker Theofanis Gekas leave the Bay Arena. Now the 28 year old has found a new club, and it is English Premier league club Portsmouth who have moved to sign him. Gekas is on a six month loan with Pompey, who have the option to make the deal permanent in the summer.

Stoke City, Sunderland and Espanyol were also interested in securing Gekas’ services. Portsmouth were supposedly going to swoop for out of favour former Barcelona star Javier Saviola, but opted for Gekas instead.

Pompey have also been linked with a move for Tottenham Hotspur’s Mexican forward Giovani Dos Santos as boss Tony Adams looks to bolster his forward line following the departure of Jermain Defoe this January.

Adams believes that Gekas has it what it takes to be a quality Premier League forward, with the Greek striker having formerly been a hit in the Bundesliga with Bochum.
