Bad result for defending champions Zenit. They were in control of the game till 85 minutes, but now face an exit unless they can do something spectacular in the next leg in St.Petersburg. Udinese restore some wounded Italian pride after Juventus, Roma and Inter were all knocked out of the Champions League by English sides in midweek.
Marseille 2-1 Ajax ( Goal scorers:- Benoit Cheyrou 19′, Mamadou Niang 33′/ Luis Suarez 36′pen)
Marseille could have won this by more than one goal because Ajax played the full second half with ten men. However the away goal means Ajax will fancy their chances at the Amsterdam Arena.
Hamburg 1-1 Galatasaray ( Goal scorers:- Marcell Jansen 50′/Ayhan Akman 33)
Gala are in the drivers’ seat after this result. They have got the away goal, and Hamburg won’t find it easy to score or win in Turkey.
Dinamo Kiev 1-0 Metalist Kharkiv ( Goal scorer:-Ognjen Vukojevic 54′)
The all Ukrainian tie goes the way of Dinamo.
CSKA 1-0 Shakhtar Donetsk ( Vagner Love 50′ pen)
Eleventh UEFA Cup goal for Vagner Love. CSKA hold a slender lead going into the second leg in Ukraine.
Werder Bremen 1-0 St.Etienne ( Naldo 28′)
Bremen were wasteful in front of goal, and St.Etienne will be thanking their stars that they are only one goal behind.
