PSG held by Montpellier in Ligue 1

By Soccer Blog | Aug 9, 2009

Newly promoted side Montpellier held domestic giants Paris Saint-Germain to a 1-1 draw in their first game of the 2009-10 Ligue 1 season.

Rene Girard’s side played with 10 men for nearly an hour, but got the equaliser they deserved in the last minute of the game as Bosnian defender Emir Spahic headed home from a Karim Ait-Fana corner.

Paris St.Germain, who finished sixth in Ligue 1 last year, needed seventy minutes to break the deadlock as Montpellier frustrated their more illustrious opponents despite being reduced to ten men after the dismissal of Cyril Jeunechamp for a second bookable offence in the 33rd minute.

PSG’s goal came from veteran Ludovic Giuly, who coolly slotted home after Montpellier keeper Geoffrey Jourdren had failed to control PSG skipper Claude Makelele’s long range effort.

But new PSG manager Antoine Kombouare was not to emerge victorious in his first league game in charge of the club. Bosnian defender Spahic headed home an equaliser in the dying seconds of the match to send the home fans into delirium, and leave PSG supporters at the Stade de la Mosson stunned.

Final score :- Montpellier HSC 1-1 Paris St.Germain

Goal scorers :- ( Emir Spahic 90+4′/ Ludovic Giuly 71′)
