Chelsea join race to sign Andrea Poli

By Soccer Blog | Oct 13, 2009

According to Italian newspaper reports, Chelsea are the latest addition to Andrea Poli’s growing list of admirers. The young midfielder, who celebrated his 20th birthday last month, has also attracted the attention of scouts from Juventus and Inter Milan after some eye catching performances for Sampdoria at the start of the 2009-10 Serie A season.

The Blucerchiati are currently second in Serie A, with sixteen points from seven games. They have the same number of points as defending champions Internazionale, but are second on goal difference.

Poli had a successful loan stint with Serie B side Sassuolo last season. He has also represented Italy at U-21 level, making his debut against Sweden U-21 in February 2009.

Poli has stated Steven Gerrard to be his idol, saying that the Liverpool skipper is the “best midfielder” in the world.

If Chelsea do get their transfer ban reversed, Carlo Ancelotti is considering making a bid for the medio in the January transfer window.
