The Europa League Play-off Round draw on 5th August, 2011 produced its own little version of the Battle of Britain as Hearts of Midlothian were drawn against Tottenham Hotspur. Hearts, who beat Hungarian outfit Paksi 5-2 over two legs in the previous round were pitted against Spurs, who finished 5th in the Premier League last season. Scottish champions Rangers, who suffered a shock defeat to Malmo in the Champions League, were drawn against Slovakian outfit Maribor while SPL runners up Celtic were pitted against Swiss outfit Sion.

Carling Cup winners Birmingham, who like Spurs, entered the Europa League at this stage, were drawn against Portuguese outfit Nacional.

Stoke City’s reward for upsetting Hajduk Split was a tie against Swiss side Thun, who themselves caused a flutter by dumping out Palermo.

Shamrock Rovers were given a tough tie in the form of Partizan Belgrade, while former Europa League finalists Fulham will play Ukrainian oufit Dnipro.

The first leg of these Europa League play-off round ties will be played on 18th August, 2011 with the reverse taking place on August 25, 2011. Hearts, Sion and Maribor are the home sides for the first leg ties.
