Groningen 0-2 Ajax Amsterdam

Martin Jol secured a win in his first Eredivisie game as Ajax manager as the Amsterdam based outfit beat Groningen 2-0 in their opening game of the 2009-10 season at the Euroborg Stadion.

Ajax, who finished third in the Eredivisie last season, took the lead through Miralem Sulejmani on 41 minutes. Jol handed a debut to €7m summer Demy de Zeeuw, but defender Timothee Athouba was only deemed fit for a spot on the bench.

Former PSV winger Dennis Rommedahl, who also scored in the recently concluded Amsterdam tournament, made sure of all three points with his 72nd minute strike.

Runners up Twente Enschede had beaten Sparta Rotterdam 2-0 yesterday, while defending champions AZ Alkmaar were shocked 3-2 by Heracles Almelo.

In other games today, Feyenoord Rotterdam won 2-0, but PSV Eindhoven were held to a 3-3 draw by VVV Venlo.
