Ashley Cole may miss game against Russia

By Soccer Blog | Oct 14, 2007

Chelsea and England left back Ashley Cole might miss his country’s crucial Euro 2008 qualifier against Russia on the 17th of October in Moscow. The former Arsenal defender suffered an ankle injury in yesterday night’s game against Estonia, which the Three Lions won 3-0 thanks to goals from Shaun Wright Philips and Wayne Rooney and an own goal from Taavi Rahn

If England beat Russia, they will assure themselves of a spot in Austria and Switzerland next year. Cole started the game on a yellow card, and was stretchered off a few minutes after half time and was replaced by Phil Neville. Joleon Lescott, who had replaced Rio Ferdinand at the lemon break, then shifted to left back.

If Cole isn’t available, McLaren will mostly give the spot to either Lescott or Reading’s Nicky Shorey.

Russia are on 18 points from nine games, while England have 23 from ten, three behind group leaders Croatia, who beat Israel 1-0 on Saturday.
