GIF Video Lorius Karius mistake for Benzema goal vs Liverpool 2018 CL Final – Howler throw Offside or not?

By Soccer Blog | May 26, 2018

This Lorius Karius mistake vs Real Madrid (GIF VIDEO BELOW) was a horrible, horrible error from the Liverpool goalkeeper as he literally gifted Benzema the opening goal of the game. Karius attempted to throw the ball across, but with Benzema so near, it misfired terribly for the German keeper. Some controversy surrounding the goal though, with questions whether Benzema was offside or not.

Karius also made a terrible error for Gareth Bale’s second goal.

Karius playing the Ulreich role here.

Was Benzema offside when he scored Real’s opening goal form Karius’ throw. If on the first ball in he had taken a touch before the ball went to Karius the linesman would have raised his flag for offside, so, when he lunged in to intercept the goalkeeper’s throw he, technically, is still in an offside position, right?

A player is NOT offside from a goal kick, a throw in or a corner. Since none of these situations applied, technically, he was offside.

John Power: I don’t understand what you are saying; please explain further. I do think you can be offside from a corner.

My opinion here is that I thought that the flag should have been raised because he was definitely in an offside position at the time the ball was played through. Then it would be up to the ref to decide if he was influencing the play….and he clearly benefitted from staying in that position. He did not even go onside and come back.

Also, can he harass the keeper when he has the ball?

    No.
He was in an offside position, but he was not offside. There’s a big difference there, technically.

How could he be offside if the person who was playing the ball was closer to the opponents goalline then what he was. This wasn’t a case of him having been in an offside position when 1 of his players hit the goalpost & the ball rebounded 2 him.

An opposition player, the keeper, had the ball under control & unfortunately played it in his way.

This was a deliberate play by Kerius and therefore cannot be offside.

Once the keeper controled the ball it became a another play with Benzema now behind the ball onside.

This was NOT offside since the goalkeeper gained possession of the ball and made a deliberate play. Possession alone was enough to reset offside

This was not offside. Once the goalkeeper has the ball, the offside is reset and players are allowed to fight for the ball but the keeper is allowed to hold the ball firmly since this is not a back pass.

Lots of players fight for ball from offside position or even from outside of the field.
