Copa America 2007 results

Here are the scores from the 42nd Edition of the Copa America currently being held in Venezuela. Venezuela are hosting this event for the first time. The USA and Mexico, the teams which contested the Gold Cup final are the invitees.

Group A

Day 1 :

Uruguay 0-3 Peru ( Miguel Villalta, Juan Carlos Merino, Jose Paulo Guerrero)

A shock result for the 14 time Copa champions Uruguay as they crash to a 3-0 defeat to underdogs Peru. Peru took their chances, although Uruguay will feel a little hard done when you look at the final score.

Venezuela 2-2 Bolivia ( Giancarlo Maldonado, Ricardo Paez/ Jaime Moreno, Juan Carlos Arce)

The hosts started off against Bolivia, and the game ended in a draw. Moreno was the star for the Bolivians, posing a constant threat from the left. A defensive error from Bolivia enabled Paez to give Venezuela the lead in the second half, but some slack defending from the hosts enabled Arce to sneak in the equaliser in the 84th minute.

Day 4 :

Uruguay 1-0 Bolivia ( Vicente Sanchez)

An important win for Oscar Tabarez’s side after the opening day setback.

Venezuela 2-0 Peru ( Alejandro Cichero, Daniel Arismandi)

Peru were one man down after Garcia got sent off early on. Ricardo Paez also got red carded 12 minutes from time, but two second half goals enabled the hosts to take their tally to 4 points from 2 games.

Group B:

Day 2 :

Brazil 0-2 Mexico ( Nery Castillo, Ramon Morales)

Another shocking result following the Uruguay game. A tired Mexico against favourites Brazil, but the result ended in the favour of El Tri. Brazil tried hard to penetrate the Mexican defence in the second half, but were unsuccessful.

Ecuador 2-3 Chile ( Luis Valencia, Christian Benitez/ Humberto Suazo*2, Carlos Villeneuva)

Ecuador have themselves to blame after conceding 2 late goals. Great result for Chile.

Day 5 :

Brazil 3-0 Chile ( Robinho*3)

Second hattrick of the tournament, and it came from one of Brazil’s players who performed well in the Mexico game.

Mexico 2-1 Ecuador ( Nery Castillo, Omar Bravo/ Edilson Mendez)

Mexico seal their passage to the last eight with this result. Olympiakos forward Castillo again proves his worth, and Edilson Mendez salvages a late equaliser for the Ecuadoreans.

Day 7 :

Mexico 0-0 Chile

A result which worked out well for both teams. Chile took the second best third placed team’s spot, and Mexico finished on top of Group B

Brazil 1-0 Ecuador ( Robinho pen)

A disputed penalty, but Brazil gather all three points to book their spot in the last eight.

Group C :

Day 3:

Argentina 4-1 USA ( Pablo Aimar, Hernan Crespo*2, Carlos Tevez/ Eddie Johnson)

The young USA team took the lead through Johnson’s penalty. Crespo equalised, and 3 goals in the last half an hour took the wind out of the USA ship.

Paraguay 5-0 Colombia ( Roque Santa Cruz*3, Salvador Cabanas*2)

The best win ever for the Guaranies over their Colombian opponents. Santa Cruz scores the first hattrick of the tournament, and Cabanas chips in with 2 after coming on as a second half sub. For a team suffering from a goal drought, scoring 5 is an achievement. The Colombian defence went to sleep in the last 10 minutes, as the back of the net was disturbed no less than three times.

Day 6 :

Argentina 4-2 Colombia ( Hernan Crespo penalty, Juan Roman Riquelme*2, Diego Milito/ Edilxon Perea, Jaime Castrilion)

Argentina let the opposition take the lead, just as the USA had in the previous game. A clever corner variation from the Colombians gave them the lead, but Argentina responded with three goals in the first half. Messi earned the penalty as well as one free kick which was sent in by Riquelme. The Albicelestes are now into the last eight.

Paraguay 3-1 USA ( Edgar Barreto, O. Cardozo, Salvador Cabanas/ Ricardo Clark)

Second win for the Guaranies out of as many games. Oscar Cardozo’s goal was the turning point in the game, and although substitute keeper Bobadilla had plenty of nervy moments towards the end of the game, a late freekick from Cabanas sealed all three points.

Day 9 :

USA 0-1 Colombia ( Jaime Castrillion)

Argentina 1-0 Paraguay ( Javier Mascherano)

Quarter finalists :

Quarter final results :

Venezuela 1-4 Uruguay ( Juan Arango/ Diego Forlan*2, Pablo Garcia, Cristian Rodriguez)

Chile 1-6 Brazil ( Humberto Suazo/ Juan, Robinho*2, Josue, Wagner Love, Julio Baptista)

Complete annihilation of the Chilean team. Their best player in the game was Mark Gonzalez, and he was taken off in the second half for Fernandez to come on. The Brazilians had a ball, scoring three in either half. It wasn’t that Chile didn’t have any chances- they did, but were foiled by the goalpost, Doni and some poor shooting from their own players.

Mexico 6-0 Paraguay ( Nery Castillo*2 ( includes penalty), Cuatemhoc Blanco penalty, Omar Bravo, Gerardo Torrardo, Fernando Arce)

Another quarterfinal with six goals from one team.

Argentina 4-0 Peru ( Juan Roman Riquelme*2, Javier Mascherano, Lionel Messi)

Semifinal results :

Uruguay 2-2 Brazil (4-5 on penalties) ( Diego Forlan, Sebastian Abreu/ Maicon, Julio Baptista)
