The News of the World, provider of several of world football’s saucy scandals, will shut down this Sunday ( July 10, 2011). The announcement of NOTW’s closing was made by News International chairman James Murdoch, who said that this Sunday’s issue of NOTW will be the paper’s last. Mr. Murdoch also added that NOTW’s last edition would not carry any commercial advertisements and all money generated would be donated to good causes.
NOTW is currently embroiled in a phone hacking scandal, with claims emerging that over 4,000 British people, including several 7/7 victims, could have victims of phone hacking by News of the World. Key advertisers have withdrawn support and Mr.Murdoch said the decision to close NOTW was taken after discussions with several senior editors. The news of NOTW’s shutting down brings an end to the publication’s 168 year run. The paper’s first edition was published in 1843.
