Nimes promoted to Ligue 1 2018- Olympique Nimes return to French top flight after 25 years

By Soccer Blog | May 5, 2018

Ligue 2 club Olympique Nimes sealed promotion to Ligue 1 for the 2018/19 season with a 4-0 win over Gazelec Ajaccio. Rachid Aliou scored twice for Les Crocodiles with Romain del Castillo and Antonin Bobichon also netting for the home side. The result confirmed second spot for Nimes behind champions Reims.

Nimes last played in Ligue 1 back in the 1992/93 season.

It’s been a tough last few seasons for Nimes. The club could have been relegated from Ligue 2 at the end of the 2014/15 season after match fixing allegations surfaced, but they ended up starting the 15/16 season with an eight point penalty. They managed to stay up that season (with fans holding a party after survival was confirmed!) and narrowly missed out on promotion at the end of 2016/17, finishing just two points behind Amiens and Troyes, both of whom got promoted.

Nimes follow in the footsteps of Angers, who themselves ended their 21 year absence from Ligue 1 by getting promoted in 2015.
