It is no secret that the beautiful game is the most widely played sport in the world. It takes little effort to play football- all you need is a ball, and some willing blokes. The rules are basic- try and find the back of the opponent’s net, and prevent them from scoring.

What separates the average footballer from the Ronaldos amd the Messis ? The answer is simple-training. Many people may be naturally talented at football, but unless you hone your talent over a consistent period of time, you’ll never reach the level of top footballers. This holds true for every sport, and not just soccer.

League Two strugglers Grimsby Town have appointed former Luton boss Mike Newell as their new manage. The Mariners had sacked Alan Buckley in mid September after picking up only two points from a possible eighteen. In their three games under caretaker manager Stuart Watkiss, Grimsby drew at Morecambe, but lost to Barnet and Rotherham.

Newell returns to management after nearly eighteen months. His contracted was terminated by Luton Town in March 2007. At Luton, Newell was not afraid to air his views, and blamed the board for not making available the funds from the sale of the club’s best players. Luton were relegated from the Championship at the end of the 2006-07 season, going down with Leeds and Southend.

The title sounds a bit lame, but that was what I could cook up just now :P

Some of you might have already heard about the Marion Jones controversy. Jones, a triple gold medallist at the Sydney Olympic Games admitted to using performance enhancing drugs. 2006 Tour De France winner Floyd Landis was stripped of his title after tests revealed an abnormally high level of testesterone.
Why does sports ban steroid and drug usage ? It is simply because we believe in a level playing field for competitors, but certain steroids can result in an increase in the endurance and speed of an athlete.

Diego Armando Maradona is undoubtedly the beautiful game’s most controversial character. Like George Best, Garrincha and many others, Maradona was in the news for his off field antics as much as he was for his exploits on the field. Many consider him to be the best player to grace the football pitch, even better than the legendary Pele. Various football pundits have questioned the circumstances behind some of his actions, and although various theories have been propounded, none have been actually clarified.
