Starting the new season with two draws and a loss was certainly not the way Sir Alex would have envisaged United’s defence of the Premiership. They were second from bottom going into their fourth game of the season, against Tottenham Hotspur.

The most popular football league in the world kicked off last weekend, and I, like millions of other fans, was waiting with bated breath. Sunderland vs Tottenham might not have been the preferred opening game for everyone, but for die hard fans like yours truly, it really didn’t matter. And we did have a bit of drama going into the game. Spurs had several people injured- Ledley King, Michael Dawson,  Gareth Bale, Benoit Assou Ekotto and Aaron Lennon. Sunderland had a thirty six year old manager in charge of his first game in the top flight- the legendary United and Nottingham Forest medio Roy Keane. Unfortunately, for his opposite number Martin Jol, it was Keane who walked out smiling after the game at the Stadium of Light.

Premiership champions Manchester United have won the FA Community Shield by beating Chelsea 3-0 on penalties. The score was tied at a goal apiece after regular play. Ryan Giggs scored for United, while new French winger Florent Malouda was on the scoresheet for Jose Mourinho’s side. This is United’s sixteenth Community Shield victory. Dutch goalkeeper Edwin Van Der Sar was the hero for the Red Devils as he blocked three Chelsea spot kicks.
It is also second time unlucky for Chelsea, having lost to Liverpool last year. Four different teams have won the Community Shield in the last four years, and this is United’s first title since 2003, when they beat Arsenal. This was also the first final to be held at the Wembley stadium since 2000
